Before You Use a Hot Spot

05 Sep 2011

Wireless Networks are definitely what seem to be appealing to all of us when in cafes or libraries with our laptops in our hands. However, there are some things that we are supposed to keep a check on before we get connected to the internet using our notebooks or more importantly when accessing our corporate networks. The following steps are sure to give you safe and secure network connections after all.

Installing a Firewall

No matter if you try to connect your laptops while your are on the road or even in a hotspot, make sure you have a firewall installed. Hotspots do not necessarily provide you with secure access points and people who have crucial data should take responsibility of their own security.

Disabling Wi-fi Ad-hoc modes

It is highly recommended that you access those wireless networks that you yourself have setup or just set them up through Windows XP connections. Also abstain from those Network connections that you have not allowed to gain access to you. Hotspots usually tend to have several networks that you may access or allow them access to your own personal files.

Try to Use Virtual Private Networks

While connecting in areas with unknown networks users whoa re always on the go should try to use their company VPNs to keep their data secure. This ensures better security for your data.

Disabling File/Printer Sharing

While using Wireless Connections it is to be made sure that there lay no folders or and devices that are enabled for sharing with other users. Any error like this and your data might just be hijacked, so make sure it is disabled at all times except only for instances where you need to transfer or share data such as in formal organizations.

Keep Wi-fi connections switched off

Mobile Wi-fi users when not connected in a hotspot should avoid keeping their connectivity on. However if you wish to work and do not really require an internet connection then even removing your Wi-fi card might be a good idea. Centrino based systems had the capability of manually switching their wireless antennas off. Palmtops can be switched off holding the globe like logo.

Do not show off with your Wi-fi capabilities

When in a stranger’s zone, meaning any hotspot that you are unfamiliar with, it would not be a good idea to boast about your laptop’s wireless connectivity. Try to avoid unknown people to lend an eye to whatever work you are doing on your laptop. Or you might just make yourself noticed by some thugs if not cyber freaks.

Password Protection

Another great idea would be to keep your crucial files password protected at all times. It will not only act as a barrier between a hack and a wireless network but also provide you peace of mind.
