Lenovo has proved itself as one of the most popular brand in the market. Its ThinkPad Edge E420 is a budget-minded notebook, which, despite its small price does job of a small business machine. The main advantages are shown in its solid performance, great keyboard and bright screen. The weak points are represented in laptop’s dimensions, weight and rubberized trackpad.

To begin with, it is necessary to note that the first ThinkPad Edge series appeared in 2010. During a year the manufacturer performed different changes in order to make the budget line better and more effective.

So, now 14-inch ThinkPad Edge models come with built-in DVD burners and faster processors. However the general look and are almost the same. Describing the specs, we should note that ThinkPad Edge E420 features high performance IntelCore i5 processor. 4GB of RAM let you run even the most demanding programs. 500GB hard drive will be enough to store a great number of photos, songs and documents. LED backlighting makes your screen thinner and more energy efficient; the HDMI port allows viewing photos and videos on HDTV.

E420 is not very impressive with its overall dimensions. Because of squared-off lid it looks and feels thick. The base is chunky. However the laptop is much better inside due to its keyboard with QWERTY keys and wide touchpad framed by black matte plastic. All this makes the design of ThinkPad a classic one with modern spin. Keyboard lacks a number pad, but curved keys respond better than classic ThinkPad keyboards.  The Shift/Enter keys are very large and easy to access.  There are also available functional keys on the top of E420 keyboard, which are responsive for screen brightness, level of volume and other commands. There is also a finger print reader, which is quite easy to configure and provides with an additional biometric security.

Stereo speakers reproduce a good sound. It’s loud but lacks a certain depth due to small size of the speakers. It will be better to use your earphones for favorite music or videos. However these are fine for basic laptop’s sounds and Skype conference.

As it was mentioned earlier ThinkPad Edge E420 features 14 inch LED backlit display. Resolution of 1,366x768 pixels is basic for standard laptops. In E420 colors look rich and real; clarity and brightness are above average. Viewing angles look good, but not great in comparison with other 14-inch laptops.

The built-in webcam demonstrates excellent contrast and light sensitivity during video conversation. If necessary you may order web camera with higher resolution on Lenovo’s site for only $30. Besides video features, you will be offered a dual array microphone which offers better conversation quality.

Lenovo produced its E420 with multiple ports, including the basics: HDMI, USB, Express Card and eSATA. There is no Bluetooth connection, but it can be ordered for an extra $20.

Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E420 will be a good choice for student due to its cheap price and standard configurations. E420 features high built quality and latest Intel processor technology. It will be good for those who appreciate practical laptops, which are going to last and won’t be outdated technology wise in two years.
